The active participants of the current rebirth of the French Progressive rock movement, LORD OF MUSHROOMS (Theyre from the Nice region), have found a rather original way to show their performance ambitions. All four of the bands instrumentalists are very masterful musicians, as well as their frontman, who is an incredibly gifted singer. For instance, guitarist Laurent JAMES, being the disciple of Frdric LEPEE (Of SHYLOCK and PHILHARMONIE fame), has a definitely profound knowledge of the instrument he had chosen. The excellent drummer Volodia BRICE seems to be just unable to count any even and other simplistic meters. Also, he participated in the recording of the fifth and the last album by PHILHARMONIE, Le Dernier Mot, which was released in 1999. There are no any doubts that the bands keyboard and bass players are as much talented musicians as both of their aforementioned colleagues. First, at the time when the band was formed, LORD OF MUSHROOMS performed the cover versions of the songs by SPOCKS BEARD, GENESIS, RUSH, MARILLION and DREAM THEATER. So some traces of the said outfits influences are present on the bands debut eponymous album. Nevertheless, the contents of the LORD OF MUSHROOMS CD show that it would be pointless to use any typical conclusions, such as A very promising debut, etc, regarding the first album of this band. When listening to the album, youll have the impression that you hear very mature musicians. By the way, their approach to composing progressive music is typical for American performers rather than European ones. Their songs are both complex and melodious, and also both intricate and accessible, which is quite a rare case on the todays scene of Progressive rock. Apart from symphonic textures, the guys, in addition, use those of a light jazz-fusion, the roots of which can be found in the creation of IZZ, ECHOLYN, and ANIMATOR. So theres no need for you to search for a really great debut: the LORD OF MUSHROOMS album is a real classic for the future !
