Shostakovich, Dmitri: Piano Concerto No.1, op. 35; Chamber Symphony in c minor, op. 110 b
Evgene Mursky, Piano; Wolfgang Bauer, Trumpet
Chamber Orchestra Arcata Stuttgart
Patrick Strub, Conductor
Familiar to many listeners for the stunning interpretations of a program of early Mendelssohn String Symphonies, Patrick Strub and Arcata Chamber Orchestra return this month in two of Shostakovich's most popular scores. The First Piano Concerto – virtually a concerto grosso for Trumpet, Piano and Strings is one of the composer's most immediately appealing scores. Peppered with sparkling charm and a playful sense of humor, soloists Mursky and Bauer give a spirited performance. The Chamber Symphony, actually a reworking of the Eighth String Quartet, is a gripping work dedicated “To the Memory of Victims of Fascism and War”. A difficult score to bring off effectively with the expanded instrumentation, Strub's disciplined players generate drama while being true to the elegiac qualities at the work's core.
